john deere commercial

.
another example of my professional work i am able to share.
.
this is a 30 second commercial for John Deere. it features a new generation of lawn mowers.
.
and here is the result:
.
.

.
.
the crew consits of the models Linda, Rita, Yasmin, Stefan, Nico, Sven and Gerald.
my assistant was Remi Urbaniak
make-up artist was Lena Gehrig (she’s brilliant, if you need a make-up artist, contact her!!! – www.lenagehrig.com)
.
the spot was entirely made with the Canon 7D with various lenses.
i edited it with Avid MC.
the spot was produced by MÜller & Friends GmbH (www.mueller-and-friends.com)
.
starting point for the development of the story was the claim “costs less than the neighbours might think”, given by John Deere.
in early february we got a inquiry for the production of a commercial spot. i sat down an worked on a couple of ideas, presented them to John Deere, they liked one of the ideas, i made a storyboard and after five weeks we began with the pre-production.
but in march you cannot find any propper lawn to mow in germany. so the decisin was made, to shoot the spot in southern portugal, at the algarve.
we had only about ten days from the beginning of the model-casting to the first day of two days of shooting. also the location has to be rented. so these were a very stressful and intense days, as you can imagine.
when we arrived at the location, the lawn was as terrible as in germany – dirt with some green blades. so we had to search for a second location for the mowing scenes. luckily we found that second location, but my plan to film over noon to have similar lights and shadows was garbage because after i did my shots on location one we had to transport all the gear to location two and set up the crane and so on. but we managed it quite well.
i filmed with three models this first day and planed to shoot with four other models the next day.
and then came the strike at the frankfurt airport!
the flights back of the models down ther in Portugal were cancelled. also the flight of the models from frankfurt to faro. then they were booked on another flight to lisbon and finally managed it to get one from lisbon to faro and arrived at the hotel at 2 a.m. – without their luggage wich contained also the costumes.
it arrived at about 10.30 on the airport at faro, they informed us at 11.30. meanwhile we’ve tried to buy something for the models, but nothing fits. so they had to drive to the airport to get their luggage – which wasn’t easy and finally arrived at 2 p.m. at the set where is was able to begin shooting at 2.45. that means about four hours of daylight left! what followed was a race against time to get everything done. but we also managed that.
a huge thank to my team! they were brilliant!
.
here are some fotos of the location and the production:

small life – the snail

. over the last years i've seen so many different animals in my backyard: insects, snails, lizards, ants and so on. they all look absolutely amazing if you can look close enough. i decided that i want to catch that beauty with the 7d and the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lense. so this is a kind of preview of what i hopefuly →

vorarlberg landscapes

. a quick edit of some footage i took in late september. i stayed for one week in vorarlberg (austria). fortunately it wasn't for work only. in my spare time i had the opportunity to drive around and enjoy the beautiful mountains. i decided, that it would be great to practise landscape shooting. . these are the results: . . cameras: Canon 7D, Canon 1000D (only for →

august stars

. i did a lot of timelapse experiments during the last couple of months. none of them were really satisfying. so i decided, i should go back to astro timelapses. and suddenly i discovered that the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 was the ideal lense for that. (i wasn't aware of that before, otherwise i would have done a lot more stuff like →

fischer stadium commercial

. another piece of my professional work. this spot will be shown during the half time breaks of the home matches of the german football/soccer national team for the next two years. it also will be shown at the home matches of VfB Stuttgart (german soccer champion in 2007). we used material of a product movie about the really great fischer screws we →

roadtrip

. being on the road can be boring! last week we drove more than 800 km to the north-west of france for a shooting (that lasts about 4 hours including setup). and the next day we drove back to germany. because i knew that i would be on the co-driver's seat the most time, i took my camera with me. this is a →

showjumping – 7D overcrank test

. it may sound funny, but since i'm playin' arond with the 7d, this was the first time i really planned a overcrank shooting to get some nice slow motion. i'd thought about that every now and then, but it never happend. So, three weeks ago, i went to a showjumping event near by and began to shoot. unluckily after about 20 minutes →

automation

. finally i am able to post some of my professional work. this is a small compilation of footage i filmed last fall for a corporate movie. it shows the automated flow of filling preproduced syringes in an absolut aseptic surrounding. it was my first professional shooting with the 7d and, besides the 50mm f1.4, i only had the 18-135mm kit lense. so →

wild bees – 2nd macro lens test

. after a lot of evenings i spent in vain by trying to set up a macro timelapse, i decided to shoot something moving. some years ago i built a "insect hotel" and mounted it in my back yard. as soon as the sun warms up everything in spring, wild bees move in the hotel. and when i heard the humming last sunday →

screws – a macro lens test

. last week i got the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. and after a couple of photographies i decided, that it is time for the first moving pictures. because i am working actually on a film about screws (preproduction in the moment, shootings will be in march), i thought, it would be a nice exercise too. so i did a really quick →
